El Salvador El Ingenio - Natural Urrutia’s Estates
During my field trip to El Salvador in March 2019, I spent a day in the company of the three Urritias brothers, who manage the range of farms the company owns. Rene, Enrique and Gustavo,
head up this fifth-generation family business established in 1870
and located in the Cordillera de Apaneca Mountain range.
After meeting them at one of their lower altitude estates, we headed to the Beneficio San Antonio mill, where all the Urrutias coffee is processed. I was impressed by the processing methods on view and it showed in the cupping session I took part in afterwards.
The surprise of the table was this ‘Natural’ from their ’El Ingenio’ farm. No one guessed what process the coffee had undergone. It had the notes of ripe red fruit, generally found in a natural, coupled with the limey acidity of a washed coffee . To achieve this balance they tweaked the processing method compared to last year and the evidence is in the cup. I was so impressed that I immediately asked if we could have some !
Only 10 bags of this coffee have been shipped to the UK, so it is indeed something of a rarity, and comes highly recommended
